Olive Oil for sale – from Walnut Tree villa’s olives

Olive Oil for sale – from Walnut Tree villa’s olives

Off to the UK A Monday morning in Argostoli, Kefalonia!  Richard Dixon (richarddixon4x4@yahoo.com) took delivery of our 17.5 kilo oil tins – we are as nervous as kittens.  It is a bit like seeing your child off on his/her first big trip from school.  Our Walnut Tree olive oil was going on a big journey, across seas and across a continent.  It is a big trip!  Oooooer! Apart from a slight mix-up because Richard took an earlier ferry than originally planned and our daughter unable to do a pick up at 5am (children asleep in bed obviously), the journey and Read more »

Olive Oil Harvest – oil for sale from The Walnut Tree villa

Olive Oil Harvest – oil for sale from The Walnut Tree villa

Good Olive Harvest in 2017 enough oil to sell for the first time!   After our best ever olive oil harvest at The Walnut Tree villa in autumn 2017, we now have enough oil to sell! As we pick our olives comparatively early, our olive oil has the distinctive bright greeny-gold colour and the slightly peppery grassy flavour associated with authentic extra virgin olive oil.  We used the olive press in Frigata for our first ‘pick’ and our local press just outside Sami for the second. Our Trees When we bought the villa thirteen years ago, there Read more »

KEFALONIA – A GOOD PLACE TO START FROM – EXPLORING GREECE!

‘I didn’t know that Kefalonia was on the way to anywhere!’ A friend said that on hearing that we had guests staying with us …… en route for Italy.  My response is this Blog!!! With daily ferries and flights to mainland Greece, ferries to all the other Ionian islands and four different ports in Italy plus direct flights to UK, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia – and of course with the several flights each day to Athens International Airport – the whole world is only a airline ticket away. Eat Walnuts at The Walnut Tree villa – they boost willpower……

‘Walnuts Boost the Willpower of Dieters’ I have just read an article that suggests that WALNUTS boost willpower!   I am certainly not suggesting summer guests should be thinking about dieting while on holiday at The Walnut Tree villa.  BUT….. looking forward to this year’s harvest of walnuts from our two trees (not much luck yet I have to admit!) this piece of information seemed like good news for a new year ‘self assessment/renewal’ …. or a spot of dieting.  I prefer the French word ‘regime’ – much kinder! As our guests often mention, our kitchens (one on each floor) Read more »

Walking in the mountains of Kefalonia

Walking in the mountains of Kefalonia

A SECRET NOT TO KEEP! Travel writers and travel companies talk the delights of Kefalonia but ignore the wild places, the National Parks and the mountains.  This is beginning to change. Over the last few years, several companies have been set up  focusing on outdoor activities.  They offer hiking and walking, climbing, mountain biking, four-wheel safaris and the like.  However, the best way to spread the word ……. word of mouth!  The best advertisement! The Walnut Tree Olive Harvest 2017

The Walnut Tree Olive Harvest 2017

For us and many others in Kefalonia, the olive crop in 2016 was just about non-existant.  So this year in 2017, the expectation was high and not to say – a little bit desperate.  We were down to our last litre as were many of our Greek friends.  On our return in late September, after some extremely hot summer weeks (with one period of ten days when the daytime temperatures did not fall below 40), we viewed our olives with some despair.  The olives were plentiful and on some trees more than plentiful, but the crop was wrinkled Read more »

Exploring Ithaki – a three day trip just scratched the surface!

Exploring Ithaki – a three day trip just scratched the surface!

When we are living at The Walnut Tree in the early spring and summer and again in the late autumn, one of our great pleasures is to take advantage of the Greek ferry system and go travelling. Ithaca!  Odysseus, Penelope, ancient castles, high mountain roads, good walking, fabulous views, beautiful churches, small unspoilt towns and harbours, deserted beaches: Ithaca/Ithaki is an island of two parts divided by a narrow bridge of land between two mountains: Paleokastro and Agros.  There are two main towns, the capital Vathi in the south part and Stavros in the north with around eight villages Read more »
