Day Trip to Ithaca

WHILE AT THE WALNUT TREE ……….. TAKE A DAY TRIP TO ITHACA

At the top of my list of suggestions for places to visit while at The Walnut Tree villa – it’s a day trip to Ithaca.  Not only is this a very beautiful island – VERY beautiful – it has that extra quality about it that makes you want to return – again and again.

ON TO THE FERRY FROM NEARBY SAMI PORT

Then getting there: you have to go by the daily ferry service from our nearby port of Sami  – so that’s easy.  You probably do need to take a car or at least bikes.  Of course you could walk. However, this blog is about a day trip or perhaps staying a night or two.

First up: getting to the ferry on time and you are in that queue and waiting to drive on.  This idea of ‘being off to a good start’ and not wasting a moment, it begins takes hold.

Half the car drivers and passengers are part of the daily island ritual.  Their phones are out and fingers tapping, just wanting to get the crossing done.  Other half – these are the day trippers, the tourists.  They are waiting for their first taste of Ithaca just soaking up every moment.  Odysseus and Penelope await!

I am not going to describe the surprises lurking round every bend on this magical and mythical island.  I give you a gallery of photos; here are some of favourite places visited over the years we have been exploring Ithaca.

CONTRARY TO PREVIOUS ADVICE!

Oh and one other point: I mentioned that walking is not an option for a short visit.  However, if you plan to stay for longer – walking is a must.

DON’T MISS the village of Perachori above Vathi (the capital of the island).  Built into the hillside, there is a timeless atmosphere to this place.  The extraordinary views of the rest of the island (as well as of mainland Greece) are part of this rebuilding your inner soul.

CAVE OF NYMPHS  –  add a walk to the Cave of the Nymphs and take in the little church along the way (you will find some marvellous wall paintings and it’s so cool inside!), this will be a day you won’t easily forget.
