KEFALONIA – A GOOD PLACE TO START FROM – EXPLORING GREECE!

‘I didn’t know that Kefalonia was on the way to anywhere!’

A friend said that on hearing that we had guests staying with us …… en route for Italy.  My response is this Blog!!!

With daily ferries and flights to mainland Greece, ferries to all the other Ionian islands and four different ports in Italy plus direct flights to UK, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia – and of course with the several flights each day to Athens International Airport – the whole world is only a airline ticket away.

Where we have been ……………. from The Walnut Tree, villa near Sami, Kefalonia?

Greece, set in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and more specifically surrounded by the Aegean and Ionian Seas, although it’s easy to think ‘ferries’ when considering exploring this beautiful country, air travel (island hopping) is becoming almost as easy.

Our favourite transport is still the more romantic ferry option.  Setting off as a foot passenger on a journey of discovery with many unknowns in front of us is a pure pleasure for me (if I am honest slightly less for Rees who likes to know at least some of the unknowns!).

Here are some of our photos to perhaps fire the spirit of adventure:

THERMOPOLI

Travel broadens the mind – well, I know this!  So why was I so surprised that there were hot springs at the battle site of Thermopoli.

Anyone seen the film ‘300’?  Well, this film is all about quite a surfeit of Athenian beautiful male bodies having ten bells taken out of them by the Persians during the Persian Wars.  Of course, the defence of the small hill at Thermopoli is the defining story of this battle – with Leonidas shouting his reply ‘Come and get them!’  when asked to lay down his arms by the Persian general.
