Eat Walnuts at The Walnut Tree villa – they boost willpower……

‘Walnuts Boost the Willpower of Dieters’ I have just read an article that suggests that WALNUTS boost willpower!   I am certainly not suggesting summer guests should be thinking about dieting while on holiday at The Walnut Tree villa.  BUT….. looking forward to this year’s harvest of walnuts from our two trees (not much luck yet I have to admit!) this piece of information seemed like good news for a new year ‘self assessment/renewal’ …. or a spot of dieting.  I prefer the French word ‘regime’ – much kinder! As our guests often mention, our kitchens (one on each floor) Read more »

Walking in the mountains of Kefalonia

Walking in the mountains of Kefalonia

A SECRET NOT TO KEEP! Travel writers and travel companies talk the delights of Kefalonia but ignore the wild places, the National Parks and the mountains.  This is beginning to change. Over the last few years, several companies have been set up  focusing on outdoor activities.  They offer hiking and walking, climbing, mountain biking, four-wheel safaris and the like.  However, the best way to spread the word ……. word of mouth!  The best advertisement! WILD NATURE EXPEDITIONS  http://wildnature-expeditions.gr   CONTACT: Kostas Vitorakis who has been running this company for several years providing activities such as Caving, Canyoning, 4 x 4 Safaris, Rock Climbing, Read more »

Exploring Ithaki – a three day trip just scratched the surface!

Exploring Ithaki – a three day trip just scratched the surface!

When we are living at The Walnut Tree in the early spring and summer and again in the late autumn, one of our great pleasures is to take advantage of the Greek ferry system and go travelling. Ithaca!  Odysseus, Penelope, ancient castles, high mountain roads, good walking, fabulous views, beautiful churches, small unspoilt towns and harbours, deserted beaches: Ithaca/Ithaki is an island of two parts divided by a narrow bridge of land between two mountains: Paleokastro and Agros.  There are two main towns, the capital Vathi in the south part and Stavros in the north with around eight villages Read more »

Dancing in Aghia Efimia on May Day

Dancing in Aghia Efimia on May Day

The first of May is a special day in Greece.  In years past we have seen traditional dances with the dancers in national costume.  This May Day it was a bit different – school children, a band of young musicians and local dancers entertaining huge crowds of Kefalonians out and about in the early summer sunshine enjoying the holiday.

First walk of Spring 2017 – Sami Lighthouse

First walk of Spring 2017 – Sami Lighthouse

One of the many reasons to return to Kefalonia in late March/early April are the walking tracks – so many walks to discover and explore.  Last Sunday, 2nd April saw us off to a good start completing the unmarked but clear track from the old village of Dichalia, past Sami sewage works (one of the most scenic in the world, I’m betting!) and then on to the track.  It is marked on the Anavasi Hiking Map but no markings on the trail itself. The track starts wide and inviting and quickly deteriorates into a rocky narrow path.  However it is Read more »

Sea Turtles of Kefalonia – helping volunteers of Wildlife Sense

Sea Turtles of Kefalonia – helping volunteers of Wildlife Sense

One of the organisations involved in the protection of Kefalonia’s Sea Turtles is Wildlife Sense (www.wildlifesense.com).  Last week we had the immense privilege to be invited to help Wildlife Sense volunteers, Shirley and Mike Ogden check nesting sites for the progress of hatching and in some cases helping the baby turtles on their journey to the sea. Wildlife Sense’s publicity leaflet tells us that ‘Kefalonia is home to 2 of the 7 sea turtle species that exist in the world.  Loggerhead sea turtles, aso known as Caretta cartta, nest and forage on Kefalonia’s coast.  Green sea turtles (Chetonia mydas) only forage Read more »

Online payment via Paypal soon to be available on The Walnut Tree villa website

Online payment via Paypal soon to be available on The Walnut Tree villa website

As well as updating The Walnut Tree villa website for 2017 rentals, we have decided to add online payment for rental bookings via Paypal.  The current situation of bank transfer security (discussed on BBC4’s Moneybox on Saturday), makes this something we feel we should be offering to our guests.  Bank transfers and cheques in the post are still options available should these be preferred. The payment method through PayPal and the updated 2017 wesbite should be visible on Monday, 19th December 2016.

Kefalonia Trails – Old Watermills Walk

Kefalonia Trails – Old Watermills Walk

Over the last few years, we have begun to explore more of the designated Trails of Kefalonia.  Many of these walks have been upgraded over recent years and given explanatory boards at their ‘Starts’ and ‘Ends’ and marked along the way by red or blue painted posts or rocks.   Last Sunday, we set off to follow the Agios Nikolaos Watermills Walk on the road between Sami and Poros, starting near Lake Avithos.  As we discovered when we arrived, there is still work continuing here and in some places there needs to be some renovation to works already completed due Read more »
