Eat Walnuts at The Walnut Tree villa – they boost willpower……

‘Walnuts Boost the Willpower of Dieters’ I have just read an article that suggests that WALNUTS boost willpower!   I am certainly not suggesting summer guests should be thinking about dieting while on holiday at The Walnut Tree villa.  BUT….. looking forward to this year’s harvest of walnuts from our two trees (not much luck yet I have to admit!) this piece of information seemed like good news for a new year ‘self assessment/renewal’ …. or a spot of dieting.  I prefer the French word ‘regime’ – much kinder! As our guests often mention, our kitchens (one on each floor) Read more »

Walking in the mountains of Kefalonia

Walking in the mountains of Kefalonia

A SECRET NOT TO KEEP! Travel writers and travel companies talk the delights of Kefalonia but ignore the wild places, the National Parks and the mountains.  This is beginning to change. Over the last few years, several companies have been set up  focusing on outdoor activities.  They offer hiking and walking, climbing, mountain biking, four-wheel safaris and the like.  However, the best way to spread the word ……. word of mouth!  The best advertisement! New ferry service linking the Ionian Islands will be inaugurated in March 2018.

What good news for the Ionian Islands!  A new linking service announced by Shipping Minister, Panagiotis Kouroumblis will provide ferries between Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos – good for tourism, trade and ease of travel for those living on islands. Perfect for those holidaying in Kefalonia (or another island) who want to island hop for part of their holiday. http://int.ert.gr/new-ferry-service-linking-ionian-islands-to-start-as-of-march-2018-says-shipping-minister/ A few photos of Ithaca taken in October 2017.  This is an island not to be missed: history, beauty, enchanting villages – we loved it! The Walnut Tree Olive Harvest 2017

The Walnut Tree Olive Harvest 2017

For us and many others in Kefalonia, the olive crop in 2016 was just about non-existant.  So this year in 2017, the expectation was high and not to say – a little bit desperate.  We were down to our last litre as were many of our Greek friends.  On our return in late September, after some extremely hot summer weeks (with one period of ten days when the daytime temperatures did not fall below 40), we viewed our olives with some despair.  The olives were plentiful and on some trees more than plentiful, but the crop was wrinkled Read more »

Exploring Ithaki – a three day trip just scratched the surface!

Exploring Ithaki – a three day trip just scratched the surface!

When we are living at The Walnut Tree in the early spring and summer and again in the late autumn, one of our great pleasures is to take advantage of the Greek ferry system and go travelling. Ithaca!  Odysseus, Penelope, ancient castles, high mountain roads, good walking, fabulous views, beautiful churches, small unspoilt towns and harbours, deserted beaches: Ithaca/Ithaki is an island of two parts divided by a narrow bridge of land between two mountains: Paleokastro and Agros.  There are two main towns, the capital Vathi in the south part and Stavros in the north with around eight villages Read more »

The Walnut Tree garden…. 12 years on!

The Walnut Tree garden…. 12 years on!

Twelve years ago, when we started making a garden at The Walnut Tree, our aim was to create a recently acquired totally barren open space into a productive, sustainable, interesting, bird and insect friendly environment.  We also wanted structure, surprises and variety. Twelve years later ….. we have a garden. We have structure created by hedges, paths and rockeries.  We have surprises introduced by cutting ‘holes’ in the hedges, introducing pathways and we created rockeries – not difficult in Kefalonia surrounded as we are by the ‘natural product’. The garden is now full of fruit trees, flowering trees, shrubs and Read more »

1st review of 2017 – a four generation family holiday!

1st review of 2017 – a four generation family holiday!

We were delighted to welcome our first guests to The Walnut Tree during Summer Half Term – a family holiday with four generations.  Here is part of their review – for which we are well and truly thankful: ‘We were a family of 12, ranging from 2yrs to 83yrs. Celia was in constant touch making sure that every wish was fulfilled. She arranged a taxi on arrival at the airport and then for departure. …..  …The pool is gorgeous and not too deep. There is a dark blue line in the shallow end that the children learnt not to cross unless Read more »

Dancing in Aghia Efimia on May Day

Dancing in Aghia Efimia on May Day

The first of May is a special day in Greece.  In years past we have seen traditional dances with the dancers in national costume.  This May Day it was a bit different – school children, a band of young musicians and local dancers entertaining huge crowds of Kefalonians out and about in the early summer sunshine enjoying the holiday.

First walk of Spring 2017 – Sami Lighthouse

First walk of Spring 2017 – Sami Lighthouse

One of the many reasons to return to Kefalonia in late March/early April are the walking tracks – so many walks to discover and explore.  Last Sunday, 2nd April saw us off to a good start completing the unmarked but clear track from the old village of Dichalia, past Sami sewage works (one of the most scenic in the world, I’m betting!) and then on to the track.  It is marked on the Anavasi Hiking Map but no markings on the trail itself. The track starts wide and inviting and quickly deteriorates into a rocky narrow path.  However it is Read more »
