FISH MARKET in Sami

FISH MARKET in Sami

SAMI HAS A FISH MARKET The Walnut Tree villa has the great advantage is being rural but NOT isolated. Visible from the upstairs windows and a short drive away is the port town of Sami where you will find 3 supermarkets, a bank, the post office, tourist shops, butchers, a fruit and veg shop AND the Fish Market. On the corner at the far end of the street behind the waterfront and very near the Port, Sami now has this amazing fish market. Captain Andreas can offer his customers just about anything ‘fishy’ that they care to mention from smelt Read more »

The Walnut Tree Garden in pictures from 2005 – Part 1!

The Walnut Tree Garden in pictures from 2005 – Part 1!

The Beginning And so to the beginning … where everything always starts.             The first photo above is taken from upstairs looking towards the road and the second photo shows where the pool is now.   We had bought a two storey half finished villa on an island where we had spent just three very lovely holidays.  Hardly an in-depth knowledge of the place we had chosen to become our second home.  From the gardening point of view, we were pretty ignorant of the region (the Mediterranean), the country (Greece) and the island of Kefalonia. Change of Ownership at The Walnut Tree

Change of Ownership at The Walnut Tree

The Walnut Tree villa near Sami, Kefalonia has changed hands. The Jefferies family, who rented the property in 2017, never quite forgot it.  Jackie and Richard who plan to make the villa a retreat for themselves and for their boys during their holiday time, but still intend to rent it out in high season. Jackie and Richard approached us in the spring of 2022 and after some deep thought, we decided to sell The Walnut Tree.  It was time to hand over to younger hands.  Since then, we have taken the opportunity to buy an old village house in Karavomilos, Read more »

Jewels of the Ionian Sea – Kefalonia, Ithaca, Corfu…..

Jewels of the Ionian Sea – Kefalonia, Ithaca, Corfu…..

THE JEWELS OF THE IONIAN SEA  –  Kefalonia, Zante, Ithaca, Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Cythera and Omfori. Of course, the island of Kefalonia’s beauty is as well known as those crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea.  Sea and land – a partnership as old as time are the magical ingredients.  Practically every photo of a great view taken on Kefalonia has the sea as its focus or the sea will be in there somewhere; in the background or peeping out from behind that hill.  Beyond the sea – more land.  More islands.  That’s just how it is!  The temptation is to Read more »

A MUSEUM IN SAMI – KEFALONIA UNCOVERED!

A MUSEUM IN SAMI – KEFALONIA UNCOVERED!

SAMI HAS A MUSEUM – RIGHT IN THE CENTRE OF TOWN I meant to write this blog last year, when I first visited the new museum in Sami.  The best of intentions so often come to nothing!  When we first arrived in Kefalonia, we only had the sketchiest idea of the history of the port and town of Sami.  Over time, the colourful past of Kefalonia slowly unfolded and we were hooked. There was the Mycenaean period when the island had been governed by the four individual city states.  This was followed by a time when Greece was divided into Read more »

Interesting residents at The Walnut Tree

Interesting residents at The Walnut Tree

If I had a Euro for every time I think ‘Well, I haven’t ever seen (heard of) that before’, I would have enough cash for a return flight to Kefalonia in high season and plus a bit!   So this nest belongs to our little Black Cap mother who makes her nest in one of the rosemary bushes every spring.  The first time she appeared we felt like murderers because we didn’t know she was there.  We disturbed her (we call it gardening) and she abandoned the nest.  Since then we are very careful to discover where she is and Read more »

Butterfly Time at The Walnut Tree villa

Butterfly Time at The Walnut Tree villa

In 2005, when we first started to think about planting the garden at The Walnut Tree villa, being insect friendly was high on the list.  We wanted to attract all insects, particularly BUTTERFLIES, moths and of course bees.  I am bound to say I have been pretty surprised by how many different insects there are.  Over the years the flyers, the ‘creepies’ and the ‘crawlies’ that emerge out of the sky or out of the undergrowth constantly amaze us.  When I stop saying ‘Well! I’ve never seen that before’ it will be a sad day.  ‘Insect Heaven’ would be Read more »

Eating out – eating in at The Walnut Tree

WARNING! I think it only fair to warn our guests that you probably won’t lose weight at The Walnut Tree villa whether you eat in or out. Boot camp it is not! DECISIONS, DECISIONS! Below is an example of a healthy breakfast. And it is very healthy. And the fruit is mostly picked from The Walnut Tree garden. Then add some locally made Kefalonian Greek yoghurt, seeds, nuts .. what could be better! It’s more about what happens next….. Picture the scene. You are sent on the morning/breakfast run to the bakery (Spathis Bakeries in both Karavomilos and Sami – Read more »

Eat Walnuts at The Walnut Tree villa – they boost willpower……

Eat Walnuts at The Walnut Tree villa – they boost willpower……

‘Walnuts Boost the Willpower of Dieters’ I have just read an article that suggests that WALNUTS boost willpower!   I am certainly not suggesting summer guests should be thinking about dieting while on holiday at The Walnut Tree villa.  BUT….. looking forward to this year’s harvest of walnuts from our two trees (not much luck yet I have to admit!) this piece of information seemed like good news for a new year ‘self assessment/renewal’ …. or a spot of dieting.  I prefer the French word ‘regime’ – much kinder! As our guests often mention, our kitchens (one on each floor) Read more »
