As I write this blog on the summer solstice, I am minded about long lazy summer days. One such day was a trip Poros adventure, just 40 minutes away from the comfort and convenience of the centrally located Walnut Tree. It was a challenge to leave the pool, however, it was also time for an adventure.
If you are considering booking the Walnut Tree as a base for your next adventure here is an idea for a fun day whilst exploring the island from a different perspective, sea level!
We arrived in good time for our pre-booked trip with George’s Boats, a warm and friendly chap, well known locally, with good spoken English. With free parking everywhere we parked 1 minute walk away directly on the quayside, strolled round town and brought extra supplies for the adventure. We’ve completed a few of these boat hires, but having a brand-new boat with the appropriate size engine was a bonus!
Following refresher instructions on safety and boat control we headed off for a new adventure with the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea below us.
We checked out a few beaches inaccessible by car and totally deserted, we finally found one with our name on it. We dropped anchor and worked up an appetite by swimming to the boat and back, snorkelling, swimming with the fish and feeding them bread. Lunch and drinks were superbly cold from the ice box built into the boat. The whole family had a blast, there were numerous photo opportunities, and the GoPro came into it’s own. The boat had large cushions for sunbathing and plenty of shade when you’ve had enough sun. Bluetooth phone connectivity had us playing our favourite bangers from the built in stereo system.
With modern life being so hectic, this rare quality time with the kids (without the Internet) was fantastic – I thoroughly recommend.
The beaches of Poros are not to be overlooked, clean, quiet and numerous, never far from a bar or taverna – this one being no exception just meters away from the waters edge.
After a shower and change we dined at a family favourite, Taverna Agrapidos. Trip advisor reviews confirm our belief that the food, service, and views are second to none at this family run taverna. Booking is highly recommended as is the house red, sensibly priced, perfect temperature and just over 3 Euro a half litre – delicious. Views of the bay are simply stunning and if you dine at the right time be sure to have a camera ready for spectacular sunsets over the gorgeous Ionian Sea.
We returned to the villa for a poolside nightcap via quiet roads with the most spectacular night sky sparkling overhead – pure bliss.
